The long road to a single sentence
A six-month investigation, condensed — and what the reporting cost along the way.

The file began as a rumour and a photocopy. It ended as eleven interviews, two rejected records requests and one sentence that had to be exactly right.
Building the record
Documents do not speak. They corroborate. Every claim in the final piece had to survive two independent sources and a paper trail, or it did not run.
The people in the middle
Half the reporting was spent earning the right to ask the second question. Trust is slow and it is the only thing that produced the story.
What it changed
Publication is not the end of a story — it is the point where other people start adding to it. Three new leads arrived in the first week.
