Notes from the road: a week in the districts
Five days, four towns and a notebook full of half-finished sentences. Here is what stayed with me.

I left the city on a Monday with a half-charged recorder and a list of names. By Friday the list had doubled and none of my original questions felt useful anymore.

The best interviews began when I stopped asking. People tell you the real story in the pause after they think the conversation is over.
“Write it the way we said it, not the way it sounds nice.”
