On stage, off script: lessons from a year of talks
Twenty-two auditoriums later, here is what actually holds a room.

The slides were never the problem. The problem was that I was performing a talk instead of having one.
Three things that worked
Start with a person, not a point. Every audience leans in for a name and a place.
Leave one thing unfinished. A question you have not answered yet gives people something to carry out of the room.
Stay after. The best material of the year came from hallway conversations at the end.
